Kemal Azis Stamboel obtained approval from the Financial Services Authority based on the Decision of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority Number KEP- 8/D-03/2014 dated 24 February 2014 and effectively served as President Commissioner/Independent Commissioner on 22 May 2014. He was reappointed as President Commissioner and Independent Commissioner of PT Bank BTPN Syariah Tbk (BTPN Syariah) in accordance with the resolutions of the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders on 12 April 2023 with a term of office until the closing of the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders to be convened in 2026.
He currently serves as Chairman of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee and a member of the Audit Committee and the Risk Monitoring Committee in BTPN Syariah. Having more than 46 years of experience, Kemal Azis Stamboel started his career in PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum (1977-1982) and pursued a career in accounting while serving as President Director, Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting Indonesia including companies in Australia and Asia Pacific (1982-2002). His experiences also include a position as Indonesia Country Leader and Partner in IBM Consulting Service related to the management of Regional Business Management in Asia Pacific in the field of change integration (2002-2004). He was a Supervisory Member on the Management of the Audit Committee in the Aceh and Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (2005-2008). As Deputy Chief Executive of the National Information and Communication Technology Board (DETIKNAS), he coordinated the Information Technology strategy in 10 (ten) ministries (2006-2008). He also held positions as Independent Commissioner and Chairman of the Audit Committee in PT Krakatau Steel (2007- 2008), as Independent Commissioner and Chairman of the Audit Committee in PT Titan Petro Chemical (2006-2012), as Independent Commissioner and Chairman of the Audit Committee in PT Holcim Indonesia (2004-2018). He was appointed as Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representative of the Republic of Indonesia overseeing Defense, Foreign Affairs and Information (2009-2010). He also served as Group Coordinator in the Bilateral Cooperation of the Indonesian Parliament and the Australian Parliament (2010-2013). While a Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission XI, he was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Working Committee on Inflation and Interest Rates for Draft Law discussions (June 2013). He was a Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission XI and a member of several working committees for the discussion of Draft Laws related to finance, development planning and banking (2010-2013). He served as Advisor to the Board of Directors of PT Indosat Tbk (July 2013 - 1 January 2018), Advisor to the Board of Directors in Bloomberg TV Indonesia (2013) and Secretary General of the Indonesian International Bank Association (PERBINA) (2013-2017).
He obtained a Bachelor of Psychology from Padjadjaran University in 1974 and a Master of Science in Business Management from Hult International Business School, USA in 1985.
He holds Level 2 Risk Management Certification for the Independent Board of Commissioners by the Banking Professional Certification Institute (LSPP). He has participated in various Refresher programs in Banking Risk Management (Executive Class), the Sharia Banking Refresher program in the International Islamic Bank by the Banking Professional Certification Institute (LSPP) and the Indonesian Sharia Bank Association (Asbisindo). He also attended various other professional and refresher training programs, among others, organized by the Indonesia Institute for Corporate Directorship (IICD) on managing risk of bribery in the private sector, ASEAN Federation of Accountants on the dynamic role of accounting in corporate governance and sustainability. Other professional programs attended include those organized by PricewaterhouseCoopers on telecommunication industries, SAP, Managing Services, Winning Assignment and Project Management, Strategic Change Management and Transformation, Business Development for Partners and Directors. He attended the XXVI IAFEI World Congress on Structural Changes, Capital Markets and Financial Institutions, as well as various other refresher programs on Sustainable Finance Action, Leadership Series, Strategic Seminars within the financial group of SMBC Group on Macro Economy, Economic Outlook, Strategic Plan and APAC ESG Strategy as well as Information Security and Risk Beyond 2022.
In addition to BTPN Syariah, Kemal Azis Stamboel has served as a Member of the Supervisory Board of WWF Indonesia since 1999 to date and as President Commissioner in a startup company PT Digital Solusi Pratama since October 2019 to date. He also serves as a Member of the Board of Trustees in Padjadjaran University for the 2020-2025 term of office.
